The Schirmacher Oasis, where I stayed, and the Schirmacher Hills that surround it, are so vast it was nearly impossible to gain perspective. Enormous mountains looked like dots, and distances of hundreds of kilometers were easily mistaken for short walks. It was just white as far as I could see, with 100 kilometers of sea ice pack in the distance, and eventually, open sea. Those are people on the right, near the middle, heading toward the mountain.
