A western lowland gorilla from the Baku Group, one of two groups of
habituated western lowland gorillas the Wildlife Conservation Society
tracks in cooperation with Ba’Aka trackers from Mondika and Mbeili
Camps deep in Nouabale-Ndoki National Park. When I was there, they
were they only habituated groups.

I thought they were fighting, but the researcher who was with me was excited to correct me – turns out they were actually playing, something he told me is rarely seen. At Mbeli Bai in Nouabal-Ndoki National Park, Republic of Congo.

There are little guys in Nouabale-Ndoki National Park too. I spotted
this guy at Mbeli Bai.

Republic of Congo – Nouabal-Ndoki National Park
Tracking gorillas in NNNP is fun and arduous. I went out with the
Ba’Aka trackers at the crack of dawn each morning (who run, not walk)
who used machetes to swash buckle our way through dense undergrowth,
thick forest, and swamps without missing a beat. By the end of
each trek, my clothes would be ripped and torn, and my body bloody
from scrapes and scratches. It was awesome!!
An enormous silverback gorilla and his son in a row? When they
stand upright, silverbacks, who are the male leaders of their groups
(“troops”), are from 5.5 to 6 feet tall and weight as much as 350
pounds…such as this fellow.

A mom from the Kingo Group and her brand new baby. The researchers I was with didn’t have to tell me what an extraordinary sight this was to see.
